Historical Interpretation

The Gold Mining Camp Museum at Monroe Park offers group tour programs by appointment only. The cost is $3 per person. For an additional $8, the program will incorporate a gold panning workshop which provides each person with a packet of local stream sand laced with real gold flakes. This program will appeal to all groups including family, students and scouts. To schedule a group program call the park office at 540-752-5330.

Free Gold Panning Demonstrations begin in March
Learn the techniques of today's prospectors and try your hand at panning for the mother lode! While there is not a stream at the museum, we have water tables filled with sand from a local stream, so there is no need to bring your swimsuit or hip waders. Our staff will show you the techniques and if you are lucky you may go home with some gold!!! Please call the park office at 540-752-5330 Tuesday through Saturday 9-5 for more information and to reserve a spot. Ages 8 and Up

An additional option is to purchase a bag of local creek sand laced with gold flakes for $8.00 (cash or checks only, please).

We recommend that you call ahead to make a reservation, especially in the spring and summer when we have many groups.

As spring weather is always unpredictable, demonstrations may not be possible due to cold temperatures or rainy/snowy conditions.
